Interior Minister Reviews Special Status Proposal for Solo

The Minister of Home Affairs, Tito Karnavian, has responded to the proposal for Surakarta, also known as Solo, to be designated as a special region. This proposal will be studied further. ‘Proposals are fine, but we will review them later. There are criteria and reasons for designating a region as special,’ said Tito at the Kemdikdasmen office in Central Jakarta on Friday (April 25, 2025). He mentioned that changing Solo’s status to a special region requires approval from the House of Representatives (DPR). This is because the establishment of a new autonomous region (DOB) must involve changes to existing laws and regulations. According to him, the proposal will be forwarded to the DPR if the study indicates that Solo meets the criteria for becoming a special region.
